Somanahalli Mallaiah Krishna, who served as the Minister of External Affairs from 2009 to 2012, passed away on Tuesday at the age of 92. S M Krishna served as the chief minister of Karnataka from 1999 to 2004, and was credited with transforming Bengaluru into the Silicon Valley of India.

S M Krishna had been in and out of hospitals for the past few months. He passed away at the age of 92 in the early hours of Tuesday.

He was awarded a Padma Vibhushan, India’s second highest civilian honour, in 2023 for his contributions towards Indian politics over a career spanning six decades. Krishna actively participated in the first elections in Karnataka, soon after his return from the United States, and became an important part of state politics.
