Yellow Alert Issued for Several Districts
India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a Yellow Alert for the following districts:
21/02/2026:
Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Pathanamthitta, Kottayam, Idukki
22/02/2026:
Pathanamthitta, Kottayam, Idukki
Heavy rainfall is likely.
“Heavy Rainfall” refers to rainfall between 64.5 mm and 115.5 mm within 24 hours.
Low Pressure System Update
A Low Pressure Area is situated over the equatorial Indian Ocean and adjoining southwest Bay of Bengal.
It is likely to move west-northwestwards towards Sri Lanka and may weaken within the next 24 hours.
A Cyclonic Circulation lies over the equatorial Indian Ocean and adjoining southeast Bay of Bengal. It is likely to intensify into a low-pressure area within the next 24 hours.
A trough extends from the low-pressure area across south Tamil Nadu and south Kerala up to Lakshadweep.
Thunderstorm Warning
In Kerala:
20/02/2026 & 23/02/2026: Possibility of rain with thunderstorms at isolated places.
21/02/2026 & 22/02/2026: Possibility of rain with thunderstorms and strong winds reaching 30–40 kmph.
Lightning Safety Guidelines
Lightning can be dangerous and may cause serious harm to humans, animals, electrical and communication systems, and household appliances connected to power lines.
Precautionary Measures:
Move indoors immediately at the first sign of lightning.
Close doors and windows; stay away from them.
Disconnect electrical appliances.
Avoid using landline telephones (mobile phones are safe).
Avoid open areas and terraces, especially for children playing.
Do not stand under trees or park vehicles beneath trees.
Stay inside vehicles during lightning (do not touch metal parts).
Avoid travel on bicycles, motorcycles, or tractors during thunderstorms.
Avoid bathing or collecting water from taps during lightning.
Stop fishing and boating activities immediately and move to the shore.
Secure loose objects that may be blown away by strong winds.
