business100news.com; Cochin Shipyard Limited (CSL), India signed a landmark Shipbuilding Contract (SBC) with French shipping major CMA CGM, one of the world’s leading container shipping companies, for the construction of six (6) 1,700 TEU LNG dual-fuel feeder container vessels.
The Contract was signed between Shri Jose V J, Chairman & Managing Director, CSL and Shri Rodolphe Saadé, Chairman & CEO on behalf of CMA CGM. The ceremony was graced by Shri Shantanu Thakur, Hon’ble Minister of State for Ports, Shipping and Waterways, Government of India, Shri Vijay Kumar IAS, Secretary, Ministry of Ports, shipping and Waterways, GoI, in the presence of senior officials from the Ministry, both organisations, and distinguished members of the maritime industry.
The collaboration will reflect strong global confidence in CSL’s technical excellence, project execution strength, and sustained commitment to sustainable maritime solutions. The contract marks a significant milestone in CSL’s journey toward expanding its global footprint in technologically advanced and environmentally responsible shipbuilding.
These vessels will represent the first large series of LNG dual-fuel feeder container ships being constructed by CSL for a major European container operator. Designed with dual-fuel engines capable of operating on liquefied natural gas (LNG), the vessels will significantly reduce emissions compared to conventional fuels and incorporate advanced energy-efficiency systems and optimized hull design. LNG is emerging as a transitional marine fuel, with global shipping orders increasingly favouring dual-fuel vessels that can lower emissions and help operators comply with tightening environmental regulations.
This contract will be a big boost to CSL’s foray into the global container shipbuilding market and enhance its credibility with leading international shipping lines. It will also strengthen CSL’s technological capabilities in LNG dual-fuel propulsion systems. In addition, it will reinforce CSL’s export order book and foreign exchange earnings, contributing directly to India’s economic and Shipbuilding objectives.
The deal aligns with the Government of India’s ambitious maritime initiatives and support national missions such as the Make in India, MIV 2030, MAKV 2047 and the drive towards maritime self-reliance, while energising India’s long-term vision for a robust, technology-driven blue economy.
