business100news.com; As a result of the efforts of Union Minister George Kurian, a regional centre of the National Fisheries Development Board (NFDB) will be established in Thiruvananthapuram. The announcement was made by Union Cabinet Minister Rajiv Ranjan “Lalan” Singh at an NFDB meeting held in Hyderabad. All preliminary procedures for setting up the centre will be completed before the Prime Minister’s visit to Thiruvananthapuram.
Since assuming office, Minister George Kurian has facilitated the implementation of development projects worth over ₹1,000 crore in Kerala through the ministries under his charge. A major share of these funds has been allocated for the development of infrastructure in the fisheries sector.
The establishment of the NFDB regional centre aims at the comprehensive development of Kerala’s fisheries sector, said Mr. George Kurian.
The centre will coordinate activities such as increasing fish production, improving infrastructure, and generating employment opportunities. Along with marine fisheries, the centre will promote aquaculture in ponds, lakes, and other inland water bodies. It will also ensure balanced growth by integrating marine, inland, and coastal aquaculture sectors.
Infrastructure facilities such as fishing harbours, landing centres, cold storage units, and drying units will be set up for fishers. Environment-friendly aquaculture, seaweed farming, and marine culture will be promoted. Training and technological support will be provided to fishers and entrepreneurs.
