As summer turns increasingly severe, water levels in major rivers of Pathanamthitta district have dropped significantly. Unlike rivers with dams where water levels fluctuate in a regulated manner, the Achankovil River — which has no dam — has begun to dry up considerably.

Acute water scarcity is being experienced in high-range areas. The region has not received sufficient summer rainfall. From Aruvappulam Kalleli upstream to Achankovil, there is hardly any significant water flow in the river.

The stretch from Kalleli upwards is forest area, and wild animals depend entirely on the Achankovil River for drinking water. Natural forest streams and ponds have dried up, worsening the situation for wildlife.

At present, only small streams of water flow along the sides and middle of the riverbed. Despite repeated demands to construct temporary check dams from Aruvappulam upstream to increase water retention, no action has been taken. The Forest Department maintains that approval from the Ministry of Environment and Forests is required.

If temporary check dams using sandbags are constructed from Kalleli to Achankovil, the available water could be retained. This would prevent water from flowing away unnecessarily and ensure sufficient drinking water for wild animals. Herds of elephants are frequently seen gathering in the Kadiyar region to drink water.

If the water level drops further, several irrigation schemes will be severely affected. Wells used for pumping water have accumulated silt, reducing their depth and efficiency.

The Achankovil River originates in the Achankovil hill ranges of Kollam district — including areas such as Pasukkidamettu, Ramakkalthery, and Rishimala — and flows through Pathanamthitta district for approximately 112 kilometers before joining the Pamba River at Veeyapuram in Alappuzha district.

Numerous small streams join together to form the Achankovil River. It supports several drinking water projects along its course and quenches the thirst of lakhs of people. The river is also vital for agricultural needs.

There is an urgent need to implement new conservation measures to protect the Achankovil River. Otherwise, in the coming years, the river may completely dry up during summer. Immediate steps, including the construction of check dams, are essential to conserve water.
