As India prepares for the 12th International Day of Yoga (IDY) on June 21, the Ministry of Ayush is turning to technology to coordinate what could become one of the world’s largest synchronised wellness movements. At the centre of this effort is the relaunched Yoga Sangam Portal, a digital platform designed to connect institutions, organisations, and communities across the country through a common yoga practice.
The portal was relaunched by Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Ayush and Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare, Shri Prataprao Jadhav, during the 25-day countdown to International Day of Yoga 2026 at Khajuraho, Madhya Pradesh. It is expected to serve as the backbone of Yoga Sangam, one of the flagship initiatives of IDY 2026, enabling online registrations and facilitating participation from schools, colleges, resident welfare associations, government bodies, private organisations, and civil society groups.
Reflecting the growing enthusiasm for IDY 2026, more than 1.7 lakh organisers have already registered their events on the Yoga Sangam Portal, taking the first step towards making this year’s celebration a historic people-led movement. The encouraging response highlights the increasing participation of institutions, organisations and communities in carrying forward the message of yoga across the country.
Highlighting the significance of the initiative, Shri Prataprao Jadhav said, “Yoga Sangam is a celebration of unity through wellness. By enabling people across thousands of locations to practise the Common Yoga Protocol simultaneously, we are fostering national integration, encouraging healthier lifestyles, and reaffirming India’s role as the global home of yoga. Our goal is to ensure that the benefits of yoga reach every section of society.”
Unlike conventional government programmes centred around a single venue, Yoga Sangam functions as a distributed national event. Partner organisations independently organise yoga sessions at their locations while following the Common Yoga Protocol (CYP), creating a synchronised nationwide demonstration of yoga practice that transcends regional, linguistic, and social boundaries.
The initiative builds upon the success of its debut during IDY 2025, when Yoga Sangam introduced the concept of synchronised mass yoga demonstrations across the country. The scale of participation was unprecedented. More than 10 lakh locations were synchronised through the initiative, while over 13.04 lakh Yoga Sangam events were registered nationwide, making it one of the largest coordinated wellness mobilisations ever undertaken in India.
Building on this momentum, the Ministry has scaled up the Yoga Sangam Portal for IDY 2026. The relaunched portal is expected to streamline participation and coordination on an even larger scale. Organisations can register their events, coordinate participation, upload photographs and reports, and contribute to a collective national celebration of yoga through a single digital platform.
Partner organisations will be responsible for local mobilisation, event logistics, adherence to the Common Yoga Protocol, and post-event reporting. Participating organisations will also receive certificates from the Ministry of Ayush recognising their contribution to the nationwide initiative.
Beyond event management, the portal reflects an important shift in the way public wellness campaigns are conducted. Rather than relying solely on large central events, Yoga Sangam adopts a participatory model in which communities organise and own their celebrations while remaining connected through a shared national framework. The platform enables decentralised participation while maintaining uniformity through the Common Yoga Protocol, allowing local action to contribute to a collective national experience.
The initiative also aligns with the Ministry’s broader efforts to deepen yoga’s reach at the grassroots level.
At a time when lifestyle-related disorders and stress-linked health concerns are receiving increasing global attention, Yoga Sangam seeks to reinforce yoga’s role as an accessible and effective wellness tool. The platform’s growing reach demonstrates how digital technology can be leveraged to transform a national observance into a people-led movement.
Over the years, the International Day of Yoga has evolved into one of the world’s largest public wellness campaigns. As preparations for IDY 2026 gather momentum, the success of Yoga Sangam may ultimately be measured not only by the number of registrations it records but by its ability to inspire collective participation in yoga at an unprecedented scale and bring the practice closer to communities across the country.
