Mission LiFE (Lifestyle for Environment) is a mass movement aimed at nudging individuals and communities to practice an environment friendly lifestyle following a Whole-of-Government and Whole-of-Society approach focusing on seven key themes viz., Save Energy, Save Water, Reduce Waste, Reduce E-Waste, Say No to Single Use Plastic, Adopt Healthy Lifestyles and Adopt Sustainable Food Systems. It aims at nudging citizens for bringing about behavioral change towards adopting a lifestyle that is in harmony with nature. The major activities undertaken under Mission LiFE since its launch in October, 2022 include the following:
Nationwide mass mobilization campaigns, including One Nation One Mission: End Plastic Pollution, Harith Yoga, Swachhata Hi Seva, World Environment Day campaigns, Ideas4LiFE, e-waste awareness drives, and other outreach initiatives through the MyGov and MYBharat portals, have been undertaken by various stakeholders to promote awareness on Mission LiFE. Mission LiFE has been showcased through interactive digital exhibits at major national events like Bharat Parv, India Water Week, Maha Kumbh Mela, etc. Under the flagship “Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam” initiative over 272 Crore saplings have been planted.
LiFE-Lifestyle for Environment included as one of the qualitative goals under India’s Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) under the Paris Agreement.
The Ministry’s EIACP Centres conduct awareness and capacity-building programmes on Mission LiFE themes. Further, over 12 lakh Eco-Clubs for Mission LiFE are working among children and youth in schools.
Two dedicated digital platforms have been launched by the Ministry – the Mission LiFE Portal as a knowledge repository and the Meri LiFE Portal for structured reporting and monitoring of LiFE events and activities. So far, over 7.3 crore people participated in more than 40 Lakh LiFE events across the country which includes 31,49,967 participants participating in more than 2 lakh LiFE related awareness and action events in Maharashtra State.
India’s key international milestones include:
At the Sixth Session of UNEA-6 held in Nairobi on 1 March 2024, India’s resolution on “Promoting Sustainable Lifestyles”, co-sponsored by Sri Lanka and Bolivia, was adopted unanimously.
At the 15th Conference of the Parties (COP15) to the Ramsar Convention held in Zimbabwe on 30 July 2025, India’s resolution on “Promoting Sustainable Lifestyles for the Wise Use of Wetlands” was adopted.
India was elected to the Board of the 10-Year Framework of Programmes on Sustainable Consumption and Production Patterns (10YFP) for consecutive terms (2024–26 and 2026–28) and currently serves as Co-Chair, further strengthening the global agenda on sustainable lifestyles.
Mission LiFE has been recognised in global forums like the Sharm-El-Sheikh Implementation Plan (COP27), the G20 New Delhi Leaders’ Declaration, etc.
India is steadily advancing towards achieving its Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) under the Paris Agreement. As per India’s First Biennial Transparency Report (BTR-1) to the UNFCCC, the emissions intensity of GDP declined by 37.38% in 2022 compared to 2005. Forest and tree cover created an additional carbon sink of 2.44 billion tonnes of COâ‚‚ equivalent between 2005 and 2022. India achieved over 50% of its cumulative installed electric power capacity from non-fossil fuel sources, five years ahead of the 2030 target. Flagship initiatives include PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana, the National Green Hydrogen Mission, National Nuclear Mission, Carbon Capture, Utilisation and Storage (CCUS) Programme. Further, to mobilise climate finance and accelerate low-carbon development, Sovereign Green Bonds and the Carbon Credit Trading Scheme have been introduced. Climate resilience is being strengthened through the National Action Plan on Climate Change (NAPCC), State Action Plans on Climate Change (SAPCCs).
The abovementioned initiatives promote clean growth, energy security, industrial competitiveness, and climate resilience, supporting India’s transition to a developed nation, thereby aligning with the vision of Viksit Bharat @2047 and India’s commitment to achieve net-zero emissions by 2070.
